Our Favorite Place To Watch The Sunset: Alison Hagerup Beach Park

captiva sunset Snuggle up, picnic and catch a sunset at one of the most romantic beaches in Florida: Alison Hagerup Beach Park on Captiva Island. As one of the most popular destinations for Sanibel Island locals and visitors, this beach park is a wide sandy stretch of beach located at the northern tip of Captiva Island off Sanibel-Captiva Road adjacent to the South Seas Island Resort. As the beach faces west, the breathtaking views capture each layer of color as the setting sun goes down over the Gulf of Mexico. Travelocity rated Captiva Beach as “The Most Romantic Beach in Florida” and it ranked #7 on a list of Top 25 Beaches in the United States in 2011. It also made USA Today’s list of “10 Best Fort Myers destination.” Alison Hagerup Beach Park is our favorite place to watch a sunset. Most locals sit on the beach for “seats” where beach erosion has naturally formed. Many residents and visitors bring picnic baskets, or wine and cheese. You can walk over to The Bubble Room restaurant for its famous decadent desserts, especially Red Velvet or Orange Crunch cake. You can take it to go and sit on the sand and watch the sunset. The beach has some of the softest sand you’ll sink your toes into, and some of the best shelling around. A person can walk for miles on Captiva but it’s also a beautiful spot to sit on the sand and read, watch the dolphins and pelicans, or even just take a nap. It’s a perfectly quiet and peaceful refuge since it doesn’t get crowded. The clear water of the Gulf of Mexico is a relaxing focal point. Open from dawn to dusk 7 days a week, Alison Hagerup Beach Park is a Lee County Public Park located at the end of San-Cap Road. There is a beach parking lot with access to Captiva Beach. Parking is limited but there are Park & Pay stations maintained by the Captiva Erosion Prevention District. For Florida residents who come here to saltwater fish from shore, there is a Saltwater Fishing License Requirement, although there is no fee. Alison Hagerup Beach Park is the last public access point before the private beach at the South Seas Island Resort. This spot is located within an easy walk to several Captiva Island cafes and casual restaurants (Sunshine Seafood Café & Wine Bar; Keylime Bistro; Captiva Pizza, Yogurt & Gifts; and RC Otter’s Island Eats).
